OPPOSITION GROWING TO STATE OWNERSHIP OF FRANCE TELECOM

France Telecom is, as of yesterday, a state-owned company with a share capital of $5,000m in 1,000m shares of 25 francs nominal each. The state will hold all the shares, and although it is intended that the company should be partially privatized this year, opposition to any relaxation of ironclad state ownership is growing, and in its craven capitulation to the xenophobes that objected to Thomson Multimedia SA being sold to a South Korean company, the present administration has shown itself ready to surrender to any well-organised pressure group.
