Following its $13m acquisition of CSD Software Gmbh in January (CI No 3,094), Cambridge, Massachusetts-based On Technology Corp has launched the On Command Comprehensive Client Manager, previously marketed by CSD as Integra SME. The systems administration software, which has been around in various incarnations for at least five years, has up until now has only been available in Germany. The latest version, 2.3, now includes support for Windows NT, and was recently demonstrated in conjunction with 3Com Corp at the PC Expo show in New York. CCM, which will eventually be integrated into On’s mainstream product line, enables network controllers to install and upgrade end user applications, and has the ability to take control of desktop PCs before the operating system boots, enabling it to be restored to a working state even when the hard disk has been corrupted or critical files have been misconfigured. The central management features and automation of common operations are claimed to reduce the total cost of PC ownership by cutting out the need to send out technicians in the event of end user software problems, with companies recouping their outlay in five to nine months, according to On, sooner in the case of major operating system migrations. On Technology is pushing the product at telecommunications and service intensive industries where user productivity at desktop level is crucial, or organizations with remote sites where technical support would otherwise be difficult to implement. On CCM is available now priced at around $150 per user; it supports DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and NT 4.x on the desktop as well as Windows NT and Sun Solaris servers.
