We increasingly expect to be able to manage most if not all things from our phones, and networks are no exception. Feast your eyes on CBR’s list of tools for your Android phone which help to monitor and administer networks.
1. Fing
Where would we be without Fing? On a personal level, I believe my life would be much the same, but many IT professionals swear by this all-rounder tool for network discovery. Rightly so – its intuitive interface hunts down all devices – PCs, routers, mobiles, printers etc – connected to your network and provides information about each one.
2. Ping & DNS
This is very much a "what it says on the tin" kind of affair. This app allows you to ping hosts, carry out DNS and Reverse DNS lookups, check HTTP headers and trace routes. The service also provides network information and diagnostics and allows you to copy results to the clipboard and send them via email, aiding cooperation across the organisation.
3. Ookla Speedtest
Ookla is trusted in the industry for its internet metrics so it’s no surprise that an app edition of its world-renowned broadband speed checker has appeared. This provides one-tap connection testing in less than 30 seconds and is accurate anywhere in the world. It provides download, upload and ping as well as real-time graphs to help you monitor the consistency of the connection.
4. IP Tools
IP Tools allows you to find the geolocation of an IP or host, even syncing with Google Maps to pinpoint them on the map. The app also has features such as ping and speed-test , making it a good contender for your one-stop network tools app.
5. Wi-fi Analyser
This handy little app will show the wi-fi channels around you and provide data on traffic and speed. It is a quick and easy way to find a gap to connect to when traffic is high around you. The maker, FarProc, provides a suite of other wi-fi related apps that are worth a look, all available through Google Play Store.
6. ActiveDir Manager
For anyone in charge of managing Active Directory, this is a must-have (admittedly I can only assume this, as I am not in charge of managing Active Directory). It provides general functionality including managing users and attributes, computer and groups, as well as allowing you to easily unlock user accounts and alter membership of groups. The app comes in two different versions, one free, and is regularly updated.
