Mosel Vitalic Inc, Taipei, Taiwan has now filled in the details on its $1.7bn memory chip joint venture with Siemens AG. The agreement is already signed, but there will be a formal signing ceremony on November 7. The new venture, ProMOS Technologies Inc, will be in Hsinchu, outside Taipei. Mosel will hold 62% and Siemens 38%, and it will occupy a chip factory already being constructed by Mosel, but will also set up a joint research and development center for memory chips. It says it will produce 64M-bit and 256M-bit parts, with the first stage, costing $1bn, expected to start production in mid-1997, and the second stage – another $700m, to begin production in late 1998. Monthly production capacity will reach 20,000 8 wafers by the end of 1997, and 40,000 wafers by end-1998.
