LG Electronics finds ‘middle way’ in digital format war

Before the much anticipated digital format war between rival contenders HD-DVD and Blu-ray disc has truly gotten underway, Korea's LG Electronics has identified something of a 'middle-way' by introducing the prospect of a dual format player.

By CBR Staff Writer

According to a Reuters report, the electronics giant has indicated that it plans to launch a next-generation DVD player capable of playing both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs.

LG Electronics had initially championed Blu-ray disc, but followed the example set by technology giant, Hewlett Packard, in announcing support for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats.

In what is undeniably a smart move by the electronics manufacturer, the launch of a dual format player means that if a format war is fought and won, LG Electronics does not lose out to either.
