GTE WEB HOSTING GROUP BUYS GENUITY

By CBR Staff Writer

GTE Corp’s web hosting subsidiary GTE Internetworking is acquiring Genuity Inc, from its current parent Bechtel Enterprises. Genuity bills itself as a value-added provider of distributed application hosting services. GTE says it wants Genuity for its strategically located data centers and a proprietary load-balancing technology, Hopscotch, which serves to ensure the efficient delivery of data across the internet. Hopscotch is designed to solve busy server problems and network congestion. Its customers include CNet Inc, Excite Inc and MCA/Universal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the acquisition will be completed through GTE Internetworking’s recently-acquired (CI No 3,155) BBN Corp affiliate. It is expected to close by the end of the year.
