General Magic Inc says its Portico integrated voice and data messaging service has gone into widespread beta ahead of its July 30 roll-out. Portico is a network that can integrate voicemail, email appointments and internet data in one place, accessible via the phone or through any internet access account with a browser. The trials actually started last month with eight telecommunications carriers involving up to 1,000 business people. The company says the beta program will extend beyond the roll-out date, at which time portico will be available through nationwide telecoms resellers, with pricing much like that of the cellular business. Four of the eight beta testing carriers are known – Bell Atlantic Mobile, BellSouth Cellular Corp, Cellular One and Triton Communications – with the rest wishing to remain anonymous at the moment. The company says pricing and the name of the resellers will be announced within the next couple of weeks, definitely before July 30.
