The new service will be known as DirectTV Broadband Video and is expected to be in operation by Q4 2006, ready to offer around 2000 subscription movies in addition to other video and TV content.
The broadband video-on-demand (VOD) service is expected to be made available through the introduction of HD versions of DirecTV set-top boxes with DVRs that will deliver content to television screens via high-speed internet connections.
The news coincides with the announcement that the TV satellite operator has secured a multi-year deal with Yes Network and MLB.com to offer the first ever interactive television content for Major League Baseball.
