Worldwide storage software revenue grew by 3.2% during the first quarter of 2013 to $3.6bn compared to the corresponding quarter revenue in 2012, according to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

IDC Storage Software research director, Eric Sheppard, said that the overall sales of storage software improved during the first quarter of 2013.

"Demand was strongest for Data Protection & Recovery software as well as Storage & Device Management software," Sheppard said.

"This was driven by a broad need for data resiliency, improvements to operational efficiencies, and better insights into installed data centre infrastructure."

EMC led the storage software market with 23.9% market share, followed by IBM and Symantec with respective market share of 16.8%and 14.7%.

Veeam and CommVault have reported highest year-over-year growth during the quarter with increases of 35.4% and 23.%, respectively.

The report revealed that the Data Protection & Recovery software revenues rose 7.6% year on year to $1.3bn, while the Storage & Device Management software revenues went up by 7.3% year on year to $706.6m.
