Sony & Juniper Networks tackle real-time big data for IP Live production

The IP Live production solution is designed to broadcasters capture and distribute live real-time coverage.

By Hannah Williams

Juniper Networks has partnered with Sony Professional Solutions Europe to use its switching technology to support Sony’s IP Live production solution.

Sony’s IP Live is designed to solve the challenge of transporting massive volumes of rich-content data in real-time.

Because the system is capable of moving massive volumes of rich-content data in real-time it enables broadcasters to capture and distribute live coverage of major sporting, cultural and political events globally.

Together with Juniper’s technology, it boosts Sony’s ability to tailor open solutions to the exact needs of each customer.

In the past broadcasters were made to rely on Serial Digital Interface (SDI) and coaxial cabling technology in order to achieve the required reliability and low latency that is necessary for production-quality broadcasts, and also transport live content from global broadcasts to production studios.

However, with the use of faster frame rates, dynamic ranges and higher resolutions available in today’s rich content, it often makes the cost of conventional cabling and hardware prohibitively expensive and cumbersome for many broadcasters.

This leads to Sony delivering a simple architecture for building an automated and high-availability network that is compatible with Juniper’s technology. The IP Live supports the transportation of high-definition and 4K ultra high-definition video and audio synchronisation signals.

Juniper switchesSony has collaborated with its partners to apply open standards for live production over IP and offers new ways of capturing and routing content, from which it selected Juniper as a networking partner using its QFX5100 switches.

Masum Mir, Vice president, Product management, Juniper Networks said: “The modern broadcasting industry is going through a big transformation to deliver increasing volumes of high-quality live content in a highly scalable and cost-efficient manner.

“This requires a robust, open and proven platform that enables broadcasters to embrace the transformational benefits of IP technology. Juniper Networks’ technology solutions underpin Sony’s capability to make IP a game-changer for liver production workflows.”

The two companies have also worked to deliver IP Live production and training courses for the broadcast industry, whereby collaborative courses show participants how to build a viable IP network, control and manage settings for optimum performance throughout the network and also mitigate errors.
