Media Tek introduces new solution

The solution downloads larger amounts of data from different applications at the same time.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

MediaTek has launched a new solution for tablets designed to improve battery life and enable multi-tasking.

The MT8135 system-on-chip solution adds the PowerVR Series 6 platform from Imagination Technologies with ARM Cortex processors, including the ARM big.LITTLE processing subsystem that allows for heterogeneous multi-processing.

This should allow users to download larger amounts of data from different applications at the same time and engage in higher quality videos and games faster and easier.

The Taiwan-based company said the solution, which is the latest SoC from MediaTek’s line of quad-core processors, also uses a scheduler algorithm, enabling applications to access all of the processors in the big.LITTLE cluster simultaneously.

Other features include Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, FM and Wi-Fi certified Miracast, which makes it easier for users to share multimedia content between devices and save energy.

Noel Hurley, VP of strategy and marketing at ARM, said: "ARM big.LITTLE technology reduces processor energy consumption by up to 70% on common workloads, which is critical in the drive towards all-day battery life for mobile platforms."

Joe Chen, GM of the home entertainment business unit at MediaTek, said: The implementation and availability of the MT8135 brings an enjoyable multitasking experience to life without requiring users to sacrifice on quality or energy.
