CRAY CLAIMS MOST POWERFUL COMMERCIAL SUPERCOMPUTER

By CBR Staff Writer

Cray Research, now part of Silicon Graphics Inc, claims to have delivered the world’s most powerful commercially available supercomputer, a Cray T3E-900 with 1,328 DEC Alpha processors, to an undisclosed site last month. Before it was delivered, scientists and researchers from the fields of meteorology, chemistry and materials science got to play with the 1.195 Teraflops peak system performance system over a three week period, running existing applications for their own purposes and as a rare chance to test parallel processing above 1,000 CPUs. Theoretically, T3E systems can scale up to 2,048 processors.
