COMPAQ TO OFFER LOW-PRICED PCs IN JAPAN

By CBR Staff Writer

Compaq Computer Corp is marketing a low-priced desktop PC in Japan targeted at home users. The Japanese unit of Compaq says the Presario 2210, a Japanese version of a model sold in the US, will sell for as low as 130,000 yen ($1,050). It uses microprocessors made by Cyrix Corp, which can cost less than half that of a comparable Intel Corp chip. The price for the desktop compares well to those sold by Japanese consumer electronics giants like NEC Corp and Fujitsu Ltd, the cheapest of which retail for about 55% more.
