Advantech, Intel, Microsoft launch joint IoT Gateway Starter Kit with links to the cloud

News: Gateways family ready to work with Microsoft Azure Marketplace for big data analytic services.

By Joao Lima

Advantech has unveiled an open gateway and platform aimed at the development of new IoT applications.

The IoT Gateway Starter Kit has been launched in collaboration with Intel, which will be providing a ready-to-run system Celeron J1900 SoC platform, and Microsoft’s Windows 7 Embedded OS.

The starter kit includes the IoT software platform service WISE-PaaS, a software development kit and technical support service.

The IoT Gateway Starter Kit hardware has also been verified to work with the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. The kit intends to allow developers to get their IoT products to market faster.

According to the Taiwanese company, the starter kit provides turnkey building blocks to connect various existing ‘things’, including machines, devices and sensors, and unifies different protocols as the M2M connectivity protocol MQTT. It then allows IoT application development for data streaming, analytics and prediction solutions.

The Advantech IoT Gateway Starter Kit has 4GB of memory and 500GB hard disk drive (HDD).

The kit includes two different gateways, ARK-1123H and the multiple input/output (I/O) ARK-2121L, both designed to withstand harsh environments, with scalability for networking and I/O communication.

The company said WISE-PaaS/RMM is ready on Microsoft Azure Marketplace for big data analytic services.

The starter kit also sits on top of Advantech’s idea of an IoT Developer Forum, where users can share real-time ideas, questions and technologies in the IoT field.

Miller Chang, VP for the embedded computing group at Advantech, said: "IoT projects are complex and take a long time to implement. Customers are looking for a quick and efficient solution to jumpstart their IoT. The Advantech IoT Gateway Starter Kit not only simplifies IoT deployment, but also creates mutually beneficial capabilities to enable application innovation."
