CARRERA UNVEILS 600MHZ WORKSTATION

By CBR Staff Writer

Laguna Hills, California-based Carrera Computers Inc looks to be in the same sort of precarious business that the now defunct Exponential Technologies Inc was in, only relying on faster versions of Digital Equipment Corp’s Alpha chip rather than the PowerPC chosen by Exponential. Still, Carrera is now seven years old, and now has a 600MHz workstation, the Cobra 600 LX, using the Alpha 21164 with 2Mb cache, 64-512Nb RAM, Extended IDE on board, optional SCSI, Ultra SCSI, Ethernet, and 2D or 3D video from $13,000. The box, introduced at Siggraph, is upgradable to 800MHz, and should be out in full production volumes by next month.
