BELLSOUTH BIDS FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS

By CBR Staff Writer

Underscoring that Meltdown Monday did nothing to tarnish the image and value of cellular telephone companies – and one that once more underlines the unique charms of Racal Electronics’ Vodafone business (see page three), BellSouth Corp is bidding $60 per head of population covered, $564m all told, for Mobile Communications Corp of America Inc, Jackson, Mississippi, which has cellular and paging franchises in 100 cities including the desirable New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston and Dallas; Mobile will spin off marine telecommunications, satellite paging and telephone answering businesses before completing the agreed deal, which will expand the Atlanta phone company’s existing cellular business to beyond its home region.
