BAY ADDS SWITCHED ETHERNET TO CENTILLION 100 SWITCH

By CBR Staff Writer

Bay Networks Inc has added a switched Ethernet to its Centillion 100 offering, claimed as the first combined Token Ring-Asynchronous Transfer Mode switch. The product was originally known as the Speed Switch 100, and was resold by Bay from Mountain View, California-based Centillion Networks Inc, until Bay acquired the company last May (CI No 2,663). Aimed at the mixed Token Ring and Ethernet environments, the 16-port EtherSpeed Modules enable the switch to provide a sustained throughput of more than 1m packets per second, and will enable the Centillion 100 to be used as a backbone switch to interconnect Ethernet and Token Ring segments and dedicated servers, said Bay. When fully configured with EtherSpeed modules, the firm said that Centillion 100 will offer 88 ports per switch. Each EtherSpeed can cache up to 16,000 Media Access Control addresses in a content-addressable memory to maximise network throughput, said the company. In addition, a network-wide virtual local are network facility is said to enable users to microsegment their network, or attach servers to dedicated segments without changing subnet numbers, which will reduce network administration. In addition, users can select cut-through or store-and-forward switching on the EtherSpeed on a per port basis. The company has also announced its GIGArray software for the Centillion 100 which has the capability for the switch to automatically load balances across multiple backbone links, enabling users to scale the backbone bandwidth to aggregate port speeds. It also increases reliability by re-routing traffic over redundant links in the event of an Asynchronous Mode failure, said Bay. Up to 16 switches can be interconnected in a GIGArray, to provide a aggregate throughput of more than 10m packets per second. Finally, the company said it will roll out Optivity management for the switch next quarter. The Optivity Autotopology module is designed to track Centillion 100s and map them them into an enterprise network diagram, while the PathMan application will enable troubleshooting of Centillion networks. In addition, said the company, the Enterprise Command Centre and Enterprise Health Advisor will provide a network-wide view and will offer integrated fault correlation and diagnosis. The EtherSpeed module will ship in October, priced at ú6,060. The GIGArray is a free upgrade for existing Centillion 100 us ers, and it will be out in September. A 100Mbps Ethernet switch module for the same system is planned for the first quarter of next year.
