Mobile phone owners in the UK now look at devices nearly 1.1 billion times a day, as the total smartphone ownership in the country soars rapidly.
76 percent of UK adults now owning a smartphone, an increase of 6 percentage points year-on-year, according to research from Deloitte.
36 percent of smartphone owners look at their device more than 25 times per day. 16 percent look at their smartphone more than 50 times a day.
Twelve percent look at them immediately upon waking, while 55 percent do so within 15 minutes of waking; 28 percent check their phones in the five minutes before going to sleep.
Phones are also checked regularly while performing other tasks; 66 percent use their devices on public transport, and almost a third while eating in a restaurant. These figures rise to 80 percent and 43 percent amongst 18 to 24-year-olds, 20 percent of whom also check their phones while crossing the road.
Employers might be troubled by the 65 percent of workers reporting using phones while at work. The figure shows the need for organisations to adopt an enterprise mobility policy if these devices are being used for work purposes.
Data demands have risen, with 25 percent of mobile owners and 30 percent of smartphone owners now using 4G.
