ACORN DOES JAVA-ON-TV

By CBR Staff Writer

Acorn Group is extending its TVcentric technologies with class libraries that will enable Java applets to run on television displays in consumer devices. Acorn has licenced the PersonalJava subset of Sun Microsystems Inc’s programming language designed for consumer appliances and will incorporate it together with the Acorn TVX extensions in a new version of its RISCsafe implementation of the Java Virtual Machine, which runs on its embedded RISC OS operating system. TVcentric enables high-quality text and images to be displayed on television-based interlaced displays without jitter or distortion. RISC OS with personal Java and Acorn TVX is due mid-1998.
