Although Japan already has a system for high-definition television in place, it seems increasingly likely that if any world standard is accepted, it will originate in the US, because the Japanese system is analogue and tomorrow’s world will be digital, while the European Commission has signally failed to cut a clear path through conflicting European lobbies and interests – and one of the four contending systems, the one conceived by Zenith Electronics Corp and backed by AT&T Co has gained a fillip with the decision of Scientific-Atlanta Inc to back it, and develop a common system with Zenith to deliver high-definition and digitally compressed standard television signals over the same cable or satellite link.
