Responding instantly to the Federal Communications Commission’s announcement, Zenith Electronics Corp and Thomson Consumer Electronics Inc leaped forward to say they plan to introduce high-definition television sets to the consumer market next year. Thomson said that digital sets will cost more than today’s analog televisions, but was not specific. Zenith and Thomson were both members of the alliance that helped to devise the US standard just ratified.
