To no-one’s great surprise, the US Air Force’s contract for 90,000 lap top IBM Personalikes has gone to Zenith Data Systems, which was competing against a Toshiba Corp crippled by the scandal of the Toshiba Machine illegal exports to the Soviet Union. The contract is worth $104.5m over three years to Zenith and follows Zenith’s $27m lap-top pact with the Internal Revenue Service. IBM was the other finalist from the 18 bidders, and the award to Zenith again points up IBM’s inability to come up with a really convincing attempt at a lap-top.
