ZENITH ELECTRONICS TO CUT WORKFORCE BY 25%

By CBR Staff Writer

Zenith Electronics Corp, Glenview, Illinois says it plans to cut its US workforce by 25% and expects to have to take a related fourth quarter restructuring charge of about $25m. It plans to eliminate about 375 salaried positions, reducing its US salaried workforce to fewer than 1,500 positions, and to cut about 800 hourly positions in 1997, largely through attrition, at its Melrose Park, Illinois, colour tube plant as new automated processes improve productivity. Our fixed costs are simply too high for a company with sales at our levels and reporting such huge losses, it says: Zenith reported net losses of $109m for the first nine months.
