The HomeWorks system for attaching local area networks to cable television systems, launched by Zenith Electronics Corp, Glenview, Illinois last year (CI No 2,241), has been extended with launch of a new modem, the ChannelMizer500. HomeWorks is a residential personal computer gateway for cable television, which supports delivery of four separate 500Kbps sub-networks on a standard cable television channel over a distance of 100 miles. According to Newsbytes, the new product supports Ethernet connections at speeds as much as 1,000 times faster than traditional modems, enabling universal interconnection of Windows, MS-DOS and Macintosh personal computers, graphics workstations, routers, bridges, file servers, terminal servers and X terminals to each other over cable networks. The primary target market for the system is remote learning systems, and a trial of this application is being sponsored by Tele-Communications Inc in Carrollton, Georgia; Zenith also sees business applications for it.
