Z Group launches HTTP acceleration for mobile phones

UK software developer Z Group Plc has launched a product that accelerates HTTP content to any Java-enabled mobile phone via a software client resident on the device carrying out screen reformatting.

The London-based company is marketing its Onspeed Mobile package for 20 pounds ($35). The basic expertise that underpins Onspeed Mobile is Z Group’s CSC compression technology for which it has a number of patents and is already present in the fixed-line version of Onspeed.

Z Group claim’s compression of Web pages by up to 80% with CSC, speeding connections to mobile phones by around five times.

A spokesperson for the company acknowledged that the main target for the technology is the end consumer. She said the installation has been made a deliberately intuitive process not unlike downloading a game or ring tone. At the high end, employees are probably going to be using BlackBerries, she said, but smaller companies may want their staff to at least be able to access webmail, which is where Onspeed Mobile would be appropriate.

By making the software OS-independent, relying only the Java-enablement of the phone, the company said it is opening up a market of around 500 million devices currently in use.
