YouView estimated to reach 230,000 subscribers after launch

The on-demand service is aimed at offering internet-connected TV to Freeview and FreeSat homes.

By CBR Staff Writer

TalkTalk, the broadband and home phone provider, has been offering a free YouView set-top box with its packages and revealed an increase in demand. TalkTalk has seen 10,000 sign-ups per week, while its total YouView sign ups have reached 120,000.

TalkTalk chief executive Dido Harding said, "We successfully launched TV and mobile handsets this summer and the growth in take-up by both existing and new customers underlines the scale of opportunity we see in these additional products."

TalkTalk also reported that its broadband subscriber base rose for the first time since three years during the third quarter and has added about 40,000 more users since 31 December 2012.

YouView will soon benefit from Sky’s decision to offer day-passes to Sky Sports channels via Now TV, so it’ll be interesting to see whether that makes a difference.

Launched as a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, Channel 5, Arqiva and TalkTalk, the on-demand service is aimed at offering internet-connected TV to Freeview and FreeSat homes.

YouView was launched in July 2012 but had been originally scheduled to be launched in 2010.

YouView provides audiences with digital television and radio channels as well as on demand programmes that are on the UK’s Freeview service.
