YouTube hits one billion monthly user milestone

Nearly one of every two internet users visits the video-sharing site.

By CBR Staff Writer

Google’s YouTube video-sharing website has reached the one billion regular visitors milestone, exactly six months after Facebook reached it’s one billion member milestone

YouTube also says it receives the second-most search queries among websites globally.

YouTube said in a statement if the video-sharing site were a country, then YouTube would be the third largest in the world after China and India.

"Our monthly viewership is the equivalent of roughly 10 Super Bowl audiences," the company said.

Launched in February 2005, the website allows users to upload and distribute their videos online.

Youtube is also exploring charging users’ cable-style subscriptions for some of channels, such as Machinima, Vice Media and Vevo, as part of its efforts to take on Netflix and Hulu as well as conventional broadcast television.

However, the website’s open network has occasionally run into controversy, with countries including Turkey and Pakistan barring the site for hosting videos deemed offensive to their citizens.
