Britain’s spies, trained at vast expense to penetrate the deepest secrets of the country’s enemies abroad, have been defeated by an object so small you can slip it into your pocket and can be purchased at shops all over the world. Indeed, it’s a fair bet that those licensed to kill are using a Psion organizer as target practise – such is the spies frustration with the pocket computer. Their anger stems from a court case last week when former MI6 agent Richard Tomlinson was jailed for a year for disclosing official secrets to an Australian publisher about a book he is writing. But the prosecution was forced to acknowledge that, once released, there is nothing they can to do stop Tomlinson publishing his book abroad. What secrets will he reveal? That’s what really spooks the spies because they have a complete copy on Tomlinson’s Psion organizer. But alas, Tomlinson learned his trade well and has encrypted the whole file. The entire might of Britain’s security service was thrown at the problem of cracking the code. They have shaken the organizer and stirred its contents – but in the end were forced to admit defeat. Clearly, this is a job for MI6’s most famous operative Bond – James Bond. He has confronted many powerful adversaries in his time – but has yet to take on the wiles of the organizer.
