The X/Open Group is presenting a white paper on transaction processing this week at Comunix following the completion of a feasibility study to define an architectural model, set of protocol boundaries and necessary Unix modifications for transaction processing systems, and a key feature is expected to be a high level protocol based on IBM’s SNA LU6.2 but independent of the underlying networking regime. The study, carried out by UK systems house Data Logic, has encouraging conclusions on the feasibility of using Unix as a basis for transaction processing systems, and the White Paper is intended to form the basis of discussion leading eventually to a complete definition of a standard architecture and interfaces. The new XPPC protocol definition will provide capabilities similar to those of the Advanced Program to Program Communications, APPC, protocol defined in LU6.2.
