San Jose, California-based Xilinx Inc is to acquire start-up Plus Logic Inc, also of San Jose, and says that the acquisition will permit it to offer a full range of high density programmable logic devices. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Xilinx says the acquisition strengthens its leadership in the high density or complex segment of the market and points out that customers prefer to stay with proven design software; research and development dollars have reached a level that makes it difficult for start-ups to leapfrog existing technology; high sales and support investments are needed to reach the broad market; and a general trend toward limited supplier bases favours those manufacturers that have broad product lines.
