Xerox Corp has named Herve Gallaire senior VP for research and technology, making him the company’s highest-ranking technologist. Gallaire will oversee 1,300 researchers and engineers in seven research and technology centers around the world, including the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), the Xerox Research Centres in Europe and Canada and the Wilton Center for Research and Technology in Webster, New York. His job is to maximize Xerox’s $1bn annual spend on R&D, and, by implication, to prevent another Ethernet or Alto from leaking out into the industry to make other companies rich. Gallaire will succeed Mark Myers on January 1 2000.
