US reports say that Xerox Corp is readying services based on its Xerox Network Services, XNS, networking protocols for Intel Corp-based Unix systems. These services will enable XNS users to run Xerox document collaboration, translation and preparation applications on 80386 and 80486-based servers running the Santa Cruz Operation Inc’s version of Unix. Until now, the applications have been available only on Xerox’s proprietary systems. Xerox is to replace lower-level XNS protocols with ISO standards. Applications running on Intel-based Unix XNS servers will host MS-DOS, OS/2 and proprietary Xerox workstations running Sun Microsystems Inc’s SunOS. Versions for other systems are in the pipeline.
