Xerox Corp’s Printing Systems Division, based in El Segundo, California hopes to release a surge of pent-up demand with a new range of printers aimed at IBM Corp’s AS/400 computer users. It claims that the cut-sheet laser printers will expand document production capabilities for the AS/400 segment of the market that has hitherto relied on continuous form impact printers or dedicated label or barcode printers. Products announced include the Xerox 4450/Midrange Printer, described as a production-class mid-range laser printer that attaches directly to the AS/400 and runs at up to 50 pages per minute; and the Xerox 4235 Release 1.5, which adds XScript, a Xerox-developed implementation of the Adobe Systems Inc PostScript Page Description Language and Hewlett-Packard Co Laserjet IID emulation, to the 35 page per minute printer. The 4450/MRP emulates seven IBM printers, including the 5219 and 5225, enabling the use of existing AS/400 applications. It offers 300 dot-per-inch print resolution, prints on both sides of a page and handles monthly volumes of up to 600,000 pages. It costs $90,000 in its base configuration. A typical configuration of the Xerox 4235 Release 1.5 sells for between $37,265 and $41,550.
