We are constantly being asked when the Linux desktop will be ready for enterprise use, and my answer is ‘Now!’, commented Andreas Typaldos, chief executive of the New York-based company.

Xandros is so confident about the enterprise functionality of Xandros Business Desktop 3.0 that it is giving a limited number of copies away free so that businesses can test it out and see for themselves.

Based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution, the latest version of Xandros Business Desktop provides domain authentication support for Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 servers, according to the company, as well as logon script, group policy, and Microsoft Exchange integration.

The product is compatible with Windows 2003 Server Service Pack 1 and also includes Sun Microsystems’ StarOffice office productivity suite with commercial support direct from Sun, and security features via the Xandros Anti-Virus and Xandros Firewall Wizard technologies.

Xandros Business Desktop 3.0 also provides support for mass deployment via the xDMS Xandros Desktop Management Server product, which was released in late 2004. Pricing for the new version starts at just under $130, with various packages available including the Xandros Desktop Management Bundle, which includes both the desktop operating system and management products.
