The deal sees Xandros licensing the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol and Outlook Exchange Transport protocol so that Scalix mail servers can synchronize data with Microsoft Exchange Server over wireless networks.

Xandros was the second Linux vendor after Novell to sign up to a patent and interoperability deal with Microsoft. The New York-based company signed up in June to work with Microsoft on systems management and server interoperability, office document compatibility, sales and marketing, and intellectual property assurance.

Xandros acquired Scalix in mid-July, adding its open source collaboration software to the company’s own desktop and server Linux distributions and systems management functionality.

Through the extension of the interoperability deal, Xandros will now be given the specifications and licenses required to develop server-side implementations of the Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Exchange Transport protocols to improve wireless connectivity and mediation between the Scalix Mail Server and mobile devices.

This agreement will enable us to provide the same range of Scalix connectivity choices for users of desktop, laptop, and handheld devices that they currently enjoy with Microsoft Exchange, commented Xandros CEO, Andreas Typaldos.
