As predicted, the X Consortium will, following expected approval by its board and members, merge its technical development and marketing efforts with those of the X Industry Association. The new organisation will continue under the auspices of the X Consortium to developing and promoting the X Window System. The X Association was formed a couple of years ago by vendor interests that felt that the X Consortium, then still part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was not able to market the X Window System effectively enough to the industry, but it never really found its way or achieved much momentum.
