Wyse Technology Inc launched a multiprocessor 80486 machine claiming that it offers the performance of a minicomputer at the price of a Compaq SystemPro. The San Jose firm’s Series 9000i Model 940, previewed at Unix Expo West in May, supports up to eight 25MHz 80486s and is claimed to deliver over 100 MIPS. It comes in a one or two tower configuration, with three to five CPUs per tower. Prices go from $38,000 to $215,000 with a system supporting 48 to 64 users on one CPU with 8Mb and 190Mb disk selling for $45,000. 80486 boards can be mixed with ones from Wyse’s 80386 box, and the machine runs under Wyse’s symmetric mult-iprocessing version of Unix System V/386 3.2.
