WoW gamers slayed by DDoS attack

Blizzard's World of Warcraft expansion hit with crashes and server glitches.

By CBR Staff Writer

Players of the newly launched World of Warcraft (WoW) expansion, dubbed ‘Warlords of Draenor’, have faced crashes and long delays due to server glitches.

The game developer Blizzard has been working to fix the issues, which included servers remaining inaccessible in Europe for five hours on Saturday.

Blizzard told the BBC: "While the majority of our players are able to play, we’re very sorry that many are stuck in queues before they’re able to get in, due to a combination of demand and the mitigating measures we’ve taken.

"We’ve been working around the clock to upgrade hardware as well as implement further software solutions so that we can reduce the queues to get in, and we’ve already seen considerable improvement."

The fifth iteration of the 10-year-old fantasy role-playing game, which went on sale from 13 November, enables accessing a new orc-controlled planet, called Draenor.

Furthermore, the concerns worsened due to a distributed denial of services (DDoS) attack, which surged Blizzard’s PCs with internet traffic in the past week.

Other noted issues included ‘player not found’ error messages; blocked access to dungeons; characters getting struck; and lag within the game.

In addition to WoW, other games hit with server glitches include Microsoft’s sci-fi shooter, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which also went on sale the previous week.
