WORRIES ARE THAT PHILIPS MAY WANT TO PULL OUT OF JOINT RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

There are worries at the European Commission and the Dutch government that Philips NV’s troubles will cause the company to want to pull out of many of the host fo European joint research programmes in which it is involved: while its intention to major on consumer electronics is likely to keep it in the high-definition television effort, it may well want to pull out of the Joint European Submicron Silicon Initiative in which it is one of the three cornerstones, the other two being Siemens AG and SGS Thomson.
