Worldwide WLAN market rises 12.5% in Q1

The enterprise segment registered 19.3% rise during the first quarter

By CBR Staff Writer

Worldwide wireless local area network (WLAN) market reported a 12.5% year-over-year rise in the first quarter of 2013, compared to the corresponding period last year, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC).

According to the report, the enterprise segment registered 19.3% rise during the first quarter, representing the thirteenth successive quarter with annual growth of more than 15%, while the consumer WLAN market grew 6.2% year over year.

IDC Network Infrastructure vice president Rohit Mehra said that the explosion of mobile devices and the uptake of enterprise mobility applications continue to be top of mind for enterprise IT in terms of driving WLAN infrastructure growth across a wide range of enterprise verticals and use cases.

"While this quarter saw some slowing of growth in Wi-Fi infrastructure rollouts for mobile offload applications, the longer term trend of cellular operators and managed service providers leveraging Wi-Fi stays intact and will continue to boost additional growth in the coming years," Mehra added.

Regionally, the enterprise WLAN market increased by 36.7% in Asia/Pacific during the period, while Indonesia led the market with highest year-over-year growth rate of 550% with total revenues of about $15m.

In Middle East & Africa (MEA), Western Europe, and the US the enterprise segments of the WLAN market rose by 25.1%, 20.0%, and 19.8% year over year respectively.

Cisco recorded a 23.4% increase in the enterprise WLAN revenue to $510m in the quarter, holding a market share of 52.9%, while Aruba experienced increase of 8.5% in revenue occupying 10.5% of market share.
