WordPerfect Corp, Orem, Utah has released WordPerfect Works 1.2 for Macintosh, which includes improvements to the recently acquired BeagleWorks program for Macintosh. WordPerfect Works is the first System 7-savvy product on the market and features In-Context Editing, enabling users to change linked data from any module without leaving the module in use. The package features six modules – word processor, with WordPerfect /LetterPerfect 2.1 import and export conversions licensed from Mastersoft Inc; database; spreadsheet with charting; draw; paint; and communication for linking to other personal computers, minis, mainframes and on-line services. The word processing module has automatic and irregular text wrap; custom character and paragraph styles; multiple headers and footers; graphic ruler; mail merge and multiple column layouts. The spreadsheet has an automatic sum tool, cell shading, in-cell editing and offers a maximum 256 columns by 16,384 rows. The database holds up to 16,384 records and 256 fields per record. It offers seven field types, background pictures, up to six selection rules per layout, picture fields and built-in functions for calculations. The draw and paint functions include line, arc, text, rectangle, rounded rectangle, oval, polygon and freehand drawing tools; there are 256 custom colours, patterns, arrows and paint brushes; detailed image editing mode; and 13 painting tools. Finally, there are editable log-in scripts, text and XModem file transfers, phone book and capture text in the communication module. WordPerfect Works runs on any Macintosh computer with a hard drive, 1Mb of RAM for System 6.0.5 or higher and 2Mb RAM for System 7.0.X. A modem or direct serial connection is required for the communications module. It costs $250 but is available to educational users at $100. Those that bought BeagleWorks before October 16 1992 can buy disks for $8; those that bought the system after that date get a free upgrade. MacWrite II, WriteNow or Macintosh Works users can upgrade to WordPerfect Works for $100.
