The Portable Computer and Communications Association says that its Wireless Modem Standards Committee has reached tentative agreement for defining a universal computer interface for wireless modems. Based on the AT command set, the specification includes extensions to accomodate new wireless network functionality: it is designed to work across networks including those of Ardis Inc and RAM Mobile Data Inc, and analogue cellular and future Cellular Digital Packet Data networks. The Wireless Modem Standards Committee says it is aiming to complete its technical work before the year-end, in order to submit a full specification to the Portable Computer and Communications Association for formal adoption. A non-profit association, the Portable Association includes among its member companies Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Alcatel TITN SA, Ardis Inc, BellSouth Mobile Data, Ericsson GE Communications Systems Inc, Intel Corp, ITT Corp, Lotus Development Corp, Megahertz Corp, Microsoft Corp, Motorola Inc, Nokia Oy, Philips Electronics NV, RadioMail Inc, RAM Mobile Data Inc, and RSA Data Security Inc. Membership is open to all.
