Apple Computer Corp looks likely to announce a new lightweight operating system for the Macintosh, as part of its new software strategy. The company’s interim chief executive, Steve Jobs is expected to announce the new Mac OS, which will be similar to Microsoft Corp’s Windows CE operating system, at its worldwide developer conference on May 11. Analysts at Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co in the US have predicted the new addition, which will add to the recovering company’s Rhapsody operating system, which is still in development, but will be aimed at high performance Macs and network servers, similar to Windows NT. When Jobs took the reins from ousted CEO Gil Amelio, he said the company had to focus on its strengths and the majority of the products that will be instrumental in Apple’s planned turnaround will be based upon MacOS (CI No 3,220).
