Windows 8 will be popular with businesses by 2016, but not consumers

According to Gartner, Windows 8 will be No. 3 in the tablet market behind Android and Apple by 2016.

Gartner predicts that the purchase tablets and smartphones and tablets will continue to increase, passing the billion mark in 2013.

Android and IOS based devices are predicted to increase their place in the enterprise.

"Today the wide range of brands and price points that the Android ecosystem is offering is winning over users. While Apple remains the heartbeat by which the market moves, Google has rapidly become its archrival," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

While Apple and Android will dominate in the consumer and business market, Windows 8 is predicted to be popular among business.

Gartner says that tablets and convertibles will be way for Windows 8 to win over businesses and estimates that the share of Windows 8 tablets and ultramobiles in enterprises will reach 39% by 2016.

Tablet purchases by businesses are expected to triple by 2016 but Gartyner says that tablets and smartphones will not completely replace PCs.

"For most businesses smartphones and tablets will not entirely replace PCs, but the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing popularity of tablets are changing the way businesses look at their device strategies and the way consumers embrace devices," said Milanesi.
