Wind River Systems Inc will ship its IxWorks real time operating system and its Tornado development environment with Digital Equipment Corp’s I2O-compliant intelligent input-output subsystems. The companies have signed an agreement that will affect DEC’s SA-110 StrongARM processor and 21285 core logic chipset, used for I2O-ready servers and adapter cards. Customers purchasing DEC’s I2O products will receive a license for the IxWorks operating system and a 30-day evaluation of Tornado. Wind River believes the agreement it has with DEC will increase emphasis on I2O – administered by a special interest group supported by DEC, Compaq Computer Corp and a host of other server vendors – as a future industry standard. IxWorks is based on Wind River’s real-time micro kernel, and is intended to provide a single plug-in framework for communicating with all I2O drivers.
