WIND RIVER SYSTEMS’ TORNADO AND VXWORKS WILL SUPPORT JAVA

By CBR Staff Writer

Alameda, California-based Wind River Systems Inc’s Tornado real- time systems development environment and VxWorks operating system will be supported by the Java application environment following the completion of a licensing agreement with Sun Microsystems Inc. Additionally, as part of the agreement Wind River has licensed the PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava application programming interfaces that are currently in development. PersonalJava has been designed for network connectable products used in the home or office including set top boxes, games consoles and mobile hand-held computers, while EmbeddedJava is designed for manufacturers who want to exploit Java in devices with limited displays such as pagers and fax machines. Wind River, which recently reported first quarter net profits up 100.7% at $3.0m (CI No 3,167) says that the combination Java and VxWorks will offer developers a very portable and scalable platform for building embedded devices. Sun believes the partnering of the technologies will make for faster time to market for Java-enabled devices.
