Williams Communications, which sold all but one strand of its 11,000-mile network to WorldCom for $2,500m on January 5, 1995, says it will re-enter the telecommunications market following the end of its three-year non-compete agreement with WorldCom. Williams is selling itself as a ‘carrier’s carrier’ aiming to sell its network services to telecoms companies. Until now the network has been used to offer multimedia applications such as video and the Internet as part of its Vyvx television services business. Williams says it will add to its network – currently the nation’s fifth largest fiber-optic network – over the next year adding a link between Washington DC and Houston, Texas.
