The Williams Telecommunications Group Inc subsidiary of Williams Co, Tulsa, Oklahoma, formed when Williams realised that all its underused oil and gas pipelines lying around the West were ideal conduits for fibre optic cable, is greatly expanding its interests with agreement to acquire Lightnet, which has 4,500 miles of optical fibre laid, from its present owners, Southern New England Telecommunications Inc and CSX Corp for $365m: Williams’ network will grow to 11,000 miles.
