PCs that run the Android operating system will struggle to compete against Windows and Apple-based desktops, despite a slew of Android PC launches, analysts have suggested.
According to analyst from Gartner, just 0.3% of worldwide desktops will be Android-based this year, while Windows-based PCs will account for approximately 95% of the market, followed by Apple with 3.4%.
By 2015, Android shipments will rise to 0.5%, while Windows and Apple will account for 94% and 3.5% respectively.
Annette Jump, Gartner’s research director who specialises in operating systems, told CBR any adoption would be driven by consumers’ available income and awareness levels.
"It’s a completely new market and there is still lots of work to be done in terms of promoting those devices, educating those consumers about the benefits of them and driving the demand," she explained.
"As much as it’s nice to have, consumers have many other devices. It’s only an additional device to go into the kitchen or living room.
"Again, creating the availability of the devices in the channel will be difficult because there is lots of innovation going on across all of the device segments…so as much as retailers would like to take a new device, they’re being very cautious in terms of inventories and supplies."
However, there could be an uptake for Android PCs in workplaces as an increasing number of businesses store and share files on the cloud.
"Potentially they’ll be more popular in a business environment or maybe in certain shops where you browse products available, so there we might potentially see faster adoption," said Jump.
The forecast comes not too long after PC vendors HP, Lenevo and Acer released Android AiO.
