The UK is experiencing a boom in technology related enterprises in the private sector.

Since 2010 the number of tech firms in the private sector has risen by 31%, which is a net gain of around 45,000 enterprises in five years.

This growth is double that of all private sector enterprises over the same period (16%).

Growth has been experienced around the country as tech clusters are on the increase in areas such as Reading.

This information comes from the KPMG/Markit Tech Monitor UK survey which listed the top tech sector enterprise clusters in 2015.

1. Reading, 22% of tech enterprises out of all businesses in the area.
2. Wokingham 21%
3. Slough 19%
4. Hounslow 18%
5. Milton Keynes 17%

Although the M4 corridor is home to three of the top five tech clusters in the country, regions across the UK are also generating growth through the tech sector.

Areas that saw the fastest increase in tech sector enterprises over the last year were:

1. Warwick +28%
2. Hackney +25%
3. Rotherham +21%
4. North Lanarkshire +20%
5. North Tyneside +20%

In addition to these growth figures, the survey found that clusters in the UK are increasingly moving towards specialisation in particular sub sectors of tech.

South Cambridgeshire for example is specialising in biotech, while Nuneaton & Bedworth is specialising in automotive-related tech.

In the last year around 63 local authorities have experienced double digit growth in the tech sector.

Tudor Aw, partner and head of KPMG’s Technology Sector, said: "Although we have seen the number of Tech enterprises grow by a third since 2010, double that of other private enterprises, we can’t take this for granted.

"It is important we see the Tech Sector be prioritised by national and local government and also focus on key issues such as STEM subject education, investment in regional infrastructure including broadband and an adequate regulatory framework."
